ASCOFacts: What Determines How Much Power an Automatic Transfer Switch Can Withstand?
In this document, we discuss how UL 1008 is used to evaluate the ability of an automatic transfer switch to withstand certain currents without creating a fire hazard and endangering the safety of personnel. UL 1008 does not attempt to evaluate the condition of the switch for continued use within the system after being subjected to these currents. To evaluate a switch’s ability to withstand currents beyond its normal load rating, the Consulting Engineer needs to know the design criteria that give a switch withstandability.
